Blue Jasmine (2013)

The Big Question

Are you in a happy marriage or relationship where you feel you have everything you could wish for?

(Whatever your answer, this chapter is for you)

Your First Impression

Let's meet Jasmine. We see her as a rich, happy woman in a great marriage; she has it all: a loving husband, a great house, a circle of friends, expensive clothes, a great body, a totally beautiful woman in a perfect life....

What's your 'first impression' of her personality?

Based on this, my first read is that she is: (Check all that apply)

What do you think her biggest *problem* in relationships will be?

The Character Dossier

What do you think about her? You're right. She's shallow person.

Her Personality:

Jasmine is arrogant, a narcissist, and a gold digger.

...But Here's Her "Fatal Flaw":

She is terrified of change; she draws an image of the life and the person she wants to be and refuses to accept anything else.

Her Superpowers

  • Resilience: Even when everything falls apart, she is still standing.
  • Confident: Her belief that she can get what she wants.

Her Kryptonite

  • Dishonesty: which causes her, her only sister, the man who loved her, and herself.

The Core Conflict

Here's the situation. Jasmine discovered that her husband is cheating on her with one of her close friends. When she faces her husband with the reality, he admits and asks for a divorce, and in return, he will provide her with a very comfortable life.

If this were your story, what would you do?

The "Reel" Consequence:

This causes her to lose everything, not only the emotional stability represented by her husband, but also her financial stability after losing all their wealth.

The Turning Point

Jasmine does not use any shield against the pain and gives in to her anger and hurt feelings, causing her to lose everything. However, she does not give up and tries to create a new life for herself, similar to the previous one, with a new, rich political fiancé, Dwight, but he learns the truth about her trying to defraud him.

"Your ethical behavior is equal to your ex-husband," and  "You could stand by and deceive me until I married you."

The "Reel" Advice

While revenge can harm the one who carries it out, dishonesty and turning a blind eye to wrongdoings will harm the person sooner or later. Resilience and starting over do not mean giving up on self-confidence, but arrogance and pride can harm the person and those around him.

Your New 'Director's Notes':

  1. Identify Your Shield: And use it when you need it.
  2. Practice "A honesty": Lies and looking the other way do not solve anything.
  3. Choose New Beginnings: Sometimes, it is scary to start over, but clinging to people or old lifestyles can cause more self-harm than someone could imagine.

"Dear Jasmine, we need to be honest with ourselves to be able to see the Solutions."
